Too Soon to Tell An Examination of the ‘Arab Spring’ and...

Ever since 2010, the worlds eyes have been zoomed in on the Middle East, as upheavals of corrupt dictatorships have spread all the way from the streets of Tunisia to the entire Arab world. Israel, as the only democracy in the area, has very delicate relationships with many of the countries involved. With the Muslim Brotherhood coming into power in Egypt, the possibility of the decades long treaty with Israel coming to a violent end is more threatening than ever. This leads us to consider the danger of other ideologically like-minded groups continuing to surround Israel. On the surface, it may seem as if the Arab Spring is very bad news for Israel, but perhaps the new leadership in the Middle East could lead to more rational†¦show more content†¦In a country where one third of the population is under 15, the young people want change. Surrounded by suspicion of chemical weapons, and daily violence directed at civilians, the UN estimates over 100,000 dead and 2 million displac ed as a result of the Arab Spring in Syria.6 Fortunately, when it come to Israel, there aren’t any of these terrible statistics. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that this Arab Spring will have a long term impact on Israel. Immediately after seeing those statistics, many peace loving, left wing Israelis are quick to see the intense negative impacts that these uprisings will have on Israel in the future. Even if these uprisings are successful, and true democracy is brought to the region, it will be a long time before these Arab countries would recognize Israel. The way things are, many top officials are saying that things are going to get worse before they get better, and that it will be decades until the positive effects of democracy reach the general Arab population.7 The immediate threat of violence in the area surrounding Israel has yet to have been a major issue, but nevertheless poses a fairly severe threat at any time but is overshadowed by the longterm one. Most notabl y is Egypt, with power in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood.
